I have found some startling information on the dangers of eczema steroid creams, if you are using a steroid cream, this is information you need to know today.

Did you know that use of topical hydrocortisone cream for such conditions as psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis can cause a number of harmful side effects?

The fact is that most “over the counter” topical steroids can contain 1 percent of hydrocortisone while prescription hydrocortisone creams can contain much more.

Hydrocortisone, a steroid used to reduce inflammation, is sold extensively in over-the-counter skin ointments. Doctors can even prescribe larger doses some of which can be given by injection. My strong recommendation is that people should be on their strictest guard about over the counter as well as prescribed use of hydrocortisone.

Let me start by giving you a quick understanding of skin structure. You see, your skin is designed to protect you from countless insults: from air pollution to murky lake water, from dirty gasoline-pump handles to staph.

Skin cells provide a physical barrier, sort of like bricks and mortar, to keep the bad things out – most of the time. The cells aren’t as tightly packed as real bricks though, which means things can squeeze by and penetrate.

The bad news is that strong chemicals can penetrate sensitive or thin skin, cause an allergic reaction, and dangerously flood your bloodstream. Hydrocortisone significantly increased the chances of a number of viruses to infect human blood cells and has even been known to cause blood poisoning.

Then, when you apply hydrocortisone cream to sensitive spots such as the eyelids, armpits, and groin (all places where eczema, rashes, and allergic reactions are particularly common), skin is thinner and more folds exist, so skin hits skin often, which can cause medications to penetrate more deeply.

These areas are also prone to stretch marks, irritation, hypo-pigmentation (lightening), and “a crinkly, cigarette-paper” appearance.

Continued use of topical steroid creams containing hydrocortisone can cause the skin to develop a resistance (called tachyplaxis) to the medication. As a result, in order to have the desired medical effect, a stronger and more potent steroid may be needed, which may cause even more potential side effects.

These side effects may include: thinning of the skin, easy bruising, permanent dilation of certain blood vessels, burn marks on skin, liver and kidney damage and a weakened immune system.

Elidel is a cream containing pimecrolimus, an immunosuppressant. It works by decreasing your body’s immune system to help slow down the growth of atopic dermatitis (eczema) on your skin.

Elidel is used to treat severe atopic dermatitis when other medications have not worked well. Elidel is most definitely not for long term use and should not be used at all if you knew the warnings. This is why the doctor says to not use more than 2 weeks.

Important information about Elidel

Do not use Elidel on a child 2 years of age or younger.

A small number of people have developed skin cancer after using tacrolimus (Protopic) skin medications

My son was using prescription elidel and his skin was thinning and we were unaware of the cancer effects. We stopped using immediately once we were alerted. They actually had to recall and put the warning on all the labels. Steroid creams are the worse and there is a better, safer way.

Atopic eczema is a disease distinguished by chronic inflammation of the skin. This is also called atopic dermatitis and can be hereditary. This is actually the most common form of eczema. Babies, children and adults are prone to this disease. But deviating from other people’s belief, it is non-contagious.

<<Discover how to safely and effectively treat skin eczema, click here>>

Those who suffer from this disease normally experience red, flaky, irritated and itchy skin. Babies have rashes in the face, elbows and knees. Children and young adults usually have the symptoms inside the elbows, behind the knees, on the wrist and on the side of the neck and hands. But of course, symptoms vary from one person to another. These are caused by the skin’s abnormal reaction to irritants and allergens scattered in the environment.

Aside from allergens, the disease may come about through other factors such as stress or fatigue. But typically, it attacks with other atopic diseases such as hay fever and asthma. So those people with history of these allergy problems have the biggest probability of undergoing the chronic inflammation of the skin and can be aggravated through the irritants and allergens.

To prevent atopic eczema, one has to know first what triggers the allergic reaction. Here are some common triggers among eczema sufferers:

Changes in temperature

Foods like peanuts, soy sauce, and etc.

Clothes made from wool and other abrasive fabrics

Allergens like dust, animal dander, mold, pollen and etc.

Chemical irritants like astringents, perfume, detergents, alcohol, paint, pesticides and harsh soaps.

Extreme fatigue and stress

Other skin infections

Basically, the prevention is obvious. One has to avoid these triggering factors to avoid eczema even for a short time only.

Eczema may develop to different kinds of people. It can hit even the wealthiest person alive. All people are prone to acquiring this kind of disease. No one’s excuse; not even babies.

Survey says one out of ten children gets eczema. It appears, typically before the age of five. Upon seeing rashes on your baby, consult a pediatrician and a dermatologist immediately to confirm the diagnosis.

Babies and children up to 5 years old get eczema on the forehead and cheeks, normally red, inflamed rashes with bumps. These become even painful for kids when the eczema develops with fluid-filled blisters that may eventually burst.

For older children, eczema develops on knees, wrists, ankles and elbows like round red scaly patches.

Bear in mind that your child needs not to be isolated from other people because eczema is not dangerous and contagious. So you don’t have to stop your kid from going to school. You can avoid the flare up by doing the following prevention and tips.

Give your baby clothes made of cotton. This help the skin breathe and cool down. Also, the scratchy feeling in reduced as well.

Use gentle french milled bars with warm water when bathing. Fragrance free soaps are gentle on skin. Use a cloth to apply the soap and never rub the skin roughly.

Regular moisturizing of the skin could help. Use creams and ointments that are advised by the doctor to maintain the skin’s moisture and reduce irritability.

Tell your child to avoid scratching and rubbing the affected areas. This may just worsen the situation and in the long run, start up painful flare.

Make sure to keep your baby’s nails trimmed down and clean.

Keep your environment clean and dust-free. Also restrict pets on some areas at home.

The basics of preventing eczema flares (periods of time when your child’s eczema gets worse) includes avoiding known triggers, such as harsh soaps, bubble baths, dust mites, food allergies, overheating and sweating, wool and polyester clothing, and keeping your child’s skin well-moisturized. Since it is often hard to identify and avoid triggers, moisturizers can be the most helpful way to avoid eczema flares. It is really simple to eliminate eczema forever, all you have to do is switch to safer products without the triggers.

To help avoid dry skin, you should give your child a daily bath using lukewarm water and a mild, moisturizing soap or soap substitute. Putting a bath oil in the water helps too. Afterwards, cover him with a moisturizer as soon as possible to seal the moisture into his skin. Did you know that the laundry you are using is a cause of eczema break outs?

Although there are many types of moisturizers, a greasy ointment will likely work best. I have the best solution because my son had it and we won the battle. Avoid lotions and creams that just sit on the skin. I can show you how to convert and start using a better lotion and how to get the skin moisturized where you notice a difference right away. People are getting the results they are looking for and finding the relief to be able to sleep at night.

Remember, doctors only get paid when we stay sick, you can take control of your health and your environment. This is about prevention and you do not have to live with the skin disease. Take the measure to find comfort and relief. Have you ever imagined not having eczema and being able to wear shorts and sleeveless shirts? No more covering up. You can be free and enjoy your skin. Control and take care of your eczema forever.

Ever wonder how you can find out if you really have eczema, it can be diagnosed by you. I know some people like to have a real diagnosis from a doctor before they except the truth. So here is a way to know if you have eczema. Skin patch test is one of the tests your physician may use to diagnose your eczema. Learn more about how this skin patch test for eczema is done and what you can expect from it.

On trying to decide on a diagnosis for a skin problem, some doctors send their patients for a skin patch test. When skin patch testing for eczema patients is done, a suspected irritant is pressed to the skin and then held there with an adhesive patch. Another adhesive patch that is devoid of anything on it is also applied as a source of comparison. The irritant patch is left in place for anywhere from one day to two days. After that period of time has elapsed it is taken away and the skin is examined. If the skin shows to be red, itchy and/or inflamed then more than likely it is the irritant in question that the patient is allergic to. Skin patch testing only becomes a necessity if the cause of your eczema is not known. Patch testing will help ascertain what you are allergic to, whether it be a material in a cosmetic product, nickel, creams, rubber, etc.

A general practitioner will refer an eczema patient to a skin specialist such as a dermatologist. When allergic or irritant contact dermatitis is deemed to be the cause then a skin patch test is scheduled. The entire procedure spans a few days. On the first day of the testing, small quantities of thirty or more different items are attached to the patient’s upper back by way of small patches. The patches are attached to the back with non-allergic tape. The patches are left on the skin for two days and then the patient comes back to the doctor’s office to have them taken off. The skin is then closely inspected to see if any allergic reactions have taken place. The patient then must return again, two days later for examination, as there is sometimes a delayed reaction to any one of the substances tested.

A number of substances are very commonly used to determine contact eczema. They are all additives that are very often included in many everyday kinds of materials such as creams, ointments, leathers, clothing and household cleaners. The additives include benzocaine, chrome, balsam of Peru, cobalt, clioquinol, nickel, formladehyde, epoxy resin, plants, fragrances, ethylenediamine, neomycin, paraben mix, imidazolidinyl urea, P-tert butylphenol, rosin, formaldehyde resin, paraphenylenediame, quaternium-15, rubber accelerators, and wool alcohols (also known as lanolin). I think that just about sums up to everything we use in our home and our bodies right? These are referred to as the standard “battery of patches.” Sometimes other substances are added into the skin patch test, such as a chemical or solvent from your place of employment or a personal care product that you use on your body or face and develop problems because of.

It is important to realize that skin patch testing can only find the causes of allergic or irritant contact eczema. It has no such effect on discussing food allergies or other forms of treatment. It is essential for the spot on your skin that is to be tested to be kept dry, not only for the initial test but also until the entire procedure is completed. This might mean that you will have to take a sponge bath instead of a shower during those four days. Don’t do anything that will cause you to sweat too much during the duration of the test. This is even more important during the summer months when high humidity often causes us to sweat more. Save your baseball games, aerobics classes, jogging and tennis for after the test has been completed. There are many other simple changes you can make as well. To find out how to eliminate your eczema forever without the hassle of wondering whether or not it is safe or not, you can get more details here.

Ok, so let’s it, we live in a mean and cruel world. First and foremost, if you follow my instructions and take the help I am offering, you do not have to use these steps because the eczema can be completely gone. No one wants to go through life feeling like they want or need to disappear from people. Help is here and available. My son is eczema free and I don’t have to worry about him itching and being uncomfortable in his class. Truth is, kids are mean and I needed to protect him if at all possible.

According to the National Institute of Health, ten to twenty percent of all babies develop eczema, but in over half of these infants, the skin disorder will get better and/or go away when they are somewhere between the ages of five and fifteen years old. An estimated one in nine children under the age of five will develop eczema. It is more difficult to get children to understand their skin disorder than it is for adults. Often children suffer more in terms of cruel comments and remarks from other children that can cut deep. Children have not mastered the ability to “go with the flow” as easily as adults have. What their peers think of them means a great deal to all children and no one wants to be shunned by others because of their appearance or the fact that they itch a lot. There are ways to help a child deal with his or her eczema.

Thoughtless, unkind remarks are likely to hurt your child from time to time, whether they come from other kids or adults, so talk to your child about these hurtful moments and reassure him or her in every way that you can. Let your child know that eczema does not make him or her strange, weird or in any way, less normal than other people. Assure your child that her skin condition cannot be “caught” by others and that it is likely to improve and perhaps even go away all together as she ages. If your child has a regular babysitter or attends a daycare center, make sure the caregivers are made aware of your child’s specific bathing, moisturizing and medicinal requirements. There is a simple way to get rid of your child’s eczema and that is priceless.

It is very common for eczema to occur as a result of irritants in the environment you are in direct contact with. The major indoor contributing allergen to eczema is the dust mite protein. Approximately ten percent of the general public develops an allergy to dust mites. The symptoms of an allergic reaction to dust mites include eyes that are itchy and watery, sneezing, a runny nose, nasal congestion, ears that are “stuffed up” and difficult to hear out of, chronic respiratory problems such as head colds and post nasal drip, asthma and the most widespread form of eczema- atopic dermatitis.

Have you ever heard that dust mites cause eczema? If so you may be curious to know if it is really a fact and do dust mites actually cause eczema. Read on to find out the facts about dust mites and other irritations that can cause eczema.

You cannot see dust mites with the unassisted human eye. Dust mites are very small, oval in shape, have eight legs and are a cream color. Dust mites have sticky pads on their feet that enable them to burrow into almost any kind of fiber in your home. They can be found in furniture and carpet. A vacuum cleaner can only clean up the particles of dead dust mites. Dust mites feed on the skin that is shed by humans as well as fingernails and hair. They also eat animal fur, bacteria, fungi and pollen. The best environment for dust mites to survive well in is when the humidity is from seventy to eighty percent. They also require temperatures anywhere between seventy-five and eighty degrees. Dust mites can’t live or prosper too long in a humidity level lower than forty. One of the best ways to avoid having eczema issues is to keep your home as free of dust mites as possible.

Many irritants can cause eczema to flare-up more often and with a higher intensity. Try to stay away from laundry detergents that will irritate the skin and be sure to rinse your clothes twice with cool water when doing the laundry. Avoid household cleaners, disinfectants, air sprays and other common household substances that cause you to sneeze, itch excessively, and develop a stuffy nose and a sore throat. Buy mild natural or organic cleaners for around your home and always spray them away from your face. We have a solution for this (LOL).

Avoid chlorine, solvents (such as paint thinners or turpentine), mineral oil as well as sand (like the sand found in children’s sandboxes) and dust particles. For some people cigarette smoke will aggravate their eczema, and of course be sure not to smoke yourself. The naturally scratchy fiber of wool can be very irritating to the skin so it’s best to wear synthetic fibers. One of the best choices is cotton because it is soft on the skin, absorbs sweat and allows your skin to ‘breathe’.

You will find plenty of cosmetics; skin and beauty products with fragrances of some type and some will also contain alcohol (some skin astringents). Products containing these elements should not be used on eczema sensitive skin. Mild soaps, body cleansers and moisturizers designed to be gentle on the skin will be best for your skin and won’t cause any irritation. Bubble bath is too drying to your skin and should be avoided. Instead, try using natural bath oil, or a colloidal oatmeal bath to help soothe your skin and make it feel soft, supple and normal.

Needless to say, we have a way to help you switch to better and safer products. My son is eczema free to this day and he was born with it.

Many people experience disappointment at the lack of progress conventional medicine is able to make against their eczema, and unfortunately most of them have no idea how much help some natural therapies can be. I’ve compiled a few tips here that may help you find some natural relief for now until you get a free consultation.

Step 1-Get Some Vitamin E Cream:
As one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, vitamin E does a great job of clearing your eczema areas of any offending microbes or bacteria. These are the little guys that cause the itching and swelling, so to be rid of them is a real boost!

Step 2-Use An Emollient:
An emollient is a little like regular moisturizer, except that it’s got a base of FAT. Yes fat. Gross? Well it may seem so but when you take into account that the fat layer will seal the moisture inside your skin and stop itching and cracking, it doesn’t seem quite so gross huh? If you apply an emollient directly after bathing or showering, you will really be doing some good as that is when there is the most moisture available to be locked under your skin.

Step 3-Get Some Blueberry Leaf Extract:
The blueberry leaves contain a form of acid, called chlorogenic acid-don’t worry it’s not the kind of acid that will eat through your carpet. This acid has certain anti microbe agents in its make up, which means it’s a very effective natural anti inflammatory. Perfect to apply to the affected area when it seems like nothing else will get the job done!

Step 4-Start Packing Moisturizer:
As we said, emollients are great, but they aren’t always super practical. That’s why it makes sense to keep a bottle of moisturizer with you all the time. That way, next time you are in the office shuffling papers and you feel your hands starting to dry out, just apply a dab of moisturizer. If you get into this habit you can really start to stop some of the worst eczema episodes in their tracks.

These steps will help reduce your eczema. If you are wishing to cure your eczema, you will need a complete system.

Eczema is one of the most common inflammatory skin diseases of childhood in developed countries and the number of children who have eczema has risen over the past few decades. Even though it is unclear why this is happening, it is now believed that food allergies could be one of the culprits. The possible reason for this could be that so much of our food is exposed to chemicals, preservatives and additives causing our immune system to react.

It is quite common to hear that someone has food allergies or food intolerance, but what is the difference between the two? Simply put, if you have a food allergy, you will react almost immediately on eating a particular food with symptoms such as skin rash, itchy nose and eyes, wheezing, itching and swelling. This can be a serious condition which needs immediate medical treatment. Common foods that can trigger an almost immediate allergic response include eggs, milk, peanuts, fish, shellfish, strawberries and tomatoes.

In the case of a food intolerance, your reaction will be delayed, usually between six and twenty-four hours. Having a food intolerance is rarely harmful, but may cause uncomfortable symptoms such as nausea, bloating, belly pain and diarrhea. Many of the foods that people become food intolerant to are those that are part of their everyday diet. Foods like milk, eggs and wheat products are found in nearly everything that we eat. Quite often you can eat these foods for years and not have a response, and then suddenly you can have a reaction. It has been noted that if you crave a particular food, you may be intolerant to it.

Drinking coffee can also be a trigger factor. It has been reported that when heavy coffee drinkers with eczema avoided coffee, their eczema symptoms improved.

If you think you or your child has a food allergy or intolerance, then there are various steps that you can take to identify it.

1) Keep a note of the trigger foods

The first thing you can do is to record your eating habits in a notebook. It would be useful to write down what you ate, when you ate it and how much you had. It may seem tedious at first, but by keeping a detailed record you can identify which foods are possible culprits.

2) Exclusion Diet

You could also try an exclusion diet where you avoid foods that you think you are allergic or intolerant to. For example, if you think you are allergic to milk, you should exclude milk and all milk products from your diet until your symptoms disappear. You could then reintroduce the food into your diet and if the symptoms return then you know for sure that you are intolerant to this particular food. In fact, research has shown that a strict avoidance of suspected culprits, can improve atopic eczema where conventional treatments have failed. If you are thinking about trying an exclusion diet, this should be done with the full knowledge of your healthcare practitioner because there could be risk, especially in children, of malnutrition.

3) Allergy Testing.

To know for sure whether you have particular food allergies or food intolerances, you could have an allergy test. There are so many types of allergy testing available, some of which are expensive and not particularly effective. It is probably best to starting by consulting your GP who can advise you on the best course of action.

The fact cannot be ignored that the rise in the prevalence of atopic eczema in childhood is now being linked to food allergies. Now that you are aware that certain foods can contribute to eczema, you can use any of the various methods suggested in order to identify them. By doing this you will be able to avoid these foods and keep eczema symptoms at bay.

I have gotten so many requests to write a book on how to safely and successfully treat skin eczema and I’m happy to announce that I just finished. Here is a excerpt from the book, this is chapter 8. Hopefully you will find this information valuable and informative. Look for more information on the book launch date.

When it comes to eczema treatment there are so many things that you can do to help your itchy, red and dry skin. If you are not sure about what to do, then follow my seven best tips on caring for your skin which will help in preventing eczema symptoms.

1) Do not overuse topical steroids

The most common medication used to treat eczema, especially in more severe cases, is a topical steroid cream. These are available in different strengths and formulas which can be purchased over the counter or prescribed by your doctor. Steroid creams should always be used sparingly and for a short period of time. The overuse of topical steroids can lead to a thinning effect on the skin, making it more fragile and prone to peeling and breaking. With steroid creams, it’s best to follow your doctor’s advice on which steroid cream to use and how long you should continue with its use.

2) Care for your skin when bathing

Here’s some advice to make your daily bath of great benefit and to help soothe the skin and replace lost moisture. Adding a bath oil to water that is not too hot will help lock in moisture to the skin. Never use bubble bath as this dries out the skin. Instead use a suitable bath oil which is preferably chemical and fragrance free. Some people recommend the use of Dead Sea Salts which contain minerals that help relieve irritation and itching. After your bath or shower, make sure that you pat the skin dry with a soft towel, leaving your skin slightly moist so that you can apply moisturizing cream.

3) Use a moisturizing cream on your skin every day

The regular use of a moisturizer, especially after bathing, can help lock in moisture and prevent dry skin. Use a cream or lotion that is easy to spread, especially if you are treating a baby or young child who does not lie or sit still for too long. Be careful to choose a cream which is free from potentially harmful ingredients such as harsh chemicals and fragrances.

4) Continue skin care even after your skin has healed

Even if you think your skin is looking better or is healed, it is important to carry on with treatment. Skin that is prone to eczema can easily get irritated again. So, always follow the recommended tips.

5) Avoid scratching the itchy area

Sometimes this is easier said than done, especially if you have a baby with eczema. It is essential that itchy skin is not scratched since scratching can break the skin and increase the risk of infection. By avoiding potential triggers and keeping skin moisturized, itching can be stopped or at least ameliorated. However, if you can’t resist scratching, make sure that your fingernails are kept short. Another tip to discourage your baby scratching is to put them in an all-in-one sleep suit with attached mittens.

6) Wear the right clothing

Since too much heat and sweat can make your skin more irritated and itchy, you should avoid wearing any tight-fitting clothing or clothing made from heavy material that doesn’t allow the skin to breath. Materials that can cause itchiness of the skin include nylon, polyester and wool. The safest material to use is 100% cotton, although some fabric mixes such as viyella, silk or soft acrylic seem to work well. If the fabric feels soft against your skin then it will probably not cause any problems, but if it is rough and scratchy then you really ought to avoid it. Also, watch out for zip fastenings, rough seams, elastic and labels which all might irritate the skin.

7) Be careful what laundry products you use

Now that you know the best types of clothing to wear, it is important to know the best laundry products to use. Avoid laundry products that contain fragrance because this may cause a reaction to the skin. Avoid using biological powders and liquids containing enzymes since enzymes can cause itchiness. Choose non-biological products, preferably in liquid form, since the powders contain bleach. Also, you should be aware that even environmentally friendly products may contain irritating enzymes or perfumes.

The best eczema treatment is caring for your skin. So, by following my seven tips, you can manage the symptoms of eczema and live an itch free life.
