Today I am little concerned at what I am hearing pediatricians tell parents to do for their kids that suffer with eczema.  On the blogs, parents are being told to bathe their kids in a bleach bath two to three times a day.  I am disgusted at that and not to mention, it is highly unsafe.  If parents knew the precautions of bleach, they would think twice.  Let me see if you agree.  Bleach is a pesticide.  Each year over 1 million children are accidentally poisoned in the home.  According to the Material Safety Data Sheet and National Poison Control Center, bleach can cause severe eye injuries and can damage the mouth, throat and stomach.  When mixed with other fumes it can be deadly. Vapors have been shown to interfere with brain function and aggravate heart conditions and produce asthma.

It is highly corrosive and caustic.

Desiree Foote’s Bleach Reaction

On March 16, 2004 25 days after her 1^st birthday Desiree was playing as usual in the living room adjacent to the kitchen with her sister Maya who was 2 at the time. Desiree was still in crawl mode a bit and just starting to pull up on things good.  Alicia my wife was spring cleaning the kitchen dining area floor and used some bleach in the mop water to get the white tiles a little cleaner. About 2 hours after she finished cleaning she noticed Desiree’s breathing had accelerated. She was still playing as normal but was very noticeably breathing faster. I took off from work after she called the doctor and they advised us to bring her into emergency. We did and they ran several tests and gave her some kind of breathing treatment to slow her breathing down, but it still wasn’t completely normalized. About two hours later around midnight they told us they would like to check her in and keep an eye on her for at least a day or so. They kept her for about 2 and a half days and we brought her home with a prescription of abutirol the asthmatic medication and a pulmonaid machine. After about a week or so of 15 minute breathing treatments with the machine every 4 hours she was fine. Towards the end of the treatments though she developed eczema pretty severely. Cracked and bleeding on her arms and legs crevices and on her neck, waking up nightly crying.

On June 6, 2004 a friend of ours Latwanas told me about this safer product manufacturer and how they cleared up her son’s facial and body eczema. We converted our home to their products. The bleach and eczema, lung irritations are history ever since.

I have found some startling information on the dangers of eczema steroid creams, if you are using a steroid cream, this is information you need to know today.

Did you know that use of topical hydrocortisone cream for such conditions as psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis can cause a number of harmful side effects?

The fact is that most “over the counter” topical steroids can contain 1 percent of hydrocortisone while prescription hydrocortisone creams can contain much more.

Hydrocortisone, a steroid used to reduce inflammation, is sold extensively in over-the-counter skin ointments. Doctors can even prescribe larger doses some of which can be given by injection. My strong recommendation is that people should be on their strictest guard about over the counter as well as prescribed use of hydrocortisone.

Let me start by giving you a quick understanding of skin structure. You see, your skin is designed to protect you from countless insults: from air pollution to murky lake water, from dirty gasoline-pump handles to staph.

Skin cells provide a physical barrier, sort of like bricks and mortar, to keep the bad things out – most of the time. The cells aren’t as tightly packed as real bricks though, which means things can squeeze by and penetrate.

The bad news is that strong chemicals can penetrate sensitive or thin skin, cause an allergic reaction, and dangerously flood your bloodstream. Hydrocortisone significantly increased the chances of a number of viruses to infect human blood cells and has even been known to cause blood poisoning.

Then, when you apply hydrocortisone cream to sensitive spots such as the eyelids, armpits, and groin (all places where eczema, rashes, and allergic reactions are particularly common), skin is thinner and more folds exist, so skin hits skin often, which can cause medications to penetrate more deeply.

These areas are also prone to stretch marks, irritation, hypo-pigmentation (lightening), and “a crinkly, cigarette-paper” appearance.

Continued use of topical steroid creams containing hydrocortisone can cause the skin to develop a resistance (called tachyplaxis) to the medication.  As a result, in order to have the desired medical effect, a stronger and more potent steroid may be needed, which may cause even more potential side effects.

These side effects may include: thinning of the skin, easy bruising, permanent dilation of certain blood vessels, burn marks on skin, liver and kidney damage and a weakened immune system.

Elidel is a cream containing pimecrolimus, an immunosuppressant. It works by decreasing your body’s immune system to help slow down the growth of atopic dermatitis (eczema) on your skin.

Elidel is used to treat severe atopic dermatitis when other medications have not worked well.  Elidel is most definitely not for long term use and should not be used at all if you knew the warnings.  This is why the doctor says to not use more than 2 weeks.

Important information about Elidel

Do not use Elidel on a child 2 years of age or younger.

A small number of people have developed skin cancer after using tacrolimus (Protopic) skin medications

My son was using prescription elidel and his skin was thinning and we were unaware of the cancer effects.  We stopped using immediately once we were alerted.  They actually had to recall and put the warning on all the labels.  Steroid creams are the worse and there is a better, safer way.

Basically, the prevention is obvious. One has to avoid these triggering factors to avoid eczema even for a short time only.

Eczema may develop to different kinds of people. It can hit even the wealthiest person alive. All people are prone to acquiring this kind of disease. No one’s excuse; not even babies.

• Regular moisturizing of the skin could help. Use creams and ointments that are advised by the doctor to maintain the skin’s moisture and reduce irritability.
• Tell your child to avoid scratching and rubbing the affected areas. This may just worsen the situation and in the long run, start up painful flare.
• Make sure to keep your baby’s nails trimmed down and clean.
• Keep your environment clean and dust-free. Also restrict pets on some areas at home.

The basics of preventing eczema flares (periods of time when your child’s eczema gets worse) includes avoiding known triggers, such as harsh soaps, bubble baths, dust mites, food allergies, overheating and sweating, wool and polyester clothing, and keeping your child’s skin well-moisturized. Ever wonder how you can find out if you really have eczema, it can be diagnosed by you.  I know some people like to have a real diagnosis from a doctor before they except the truth.  So here is a way to know if you have eczema.  Skin patch test is one of the tests your physician may use to diagnose your eczema. Learn more about how this skin patch test for eczema is done and what you can expect from it.

On trying to decide on a diagnosis for a skin problem, some doctors send their patients for a skin patch test. When skin patch testing for eczema patients is done, a suspected irritant is pressed to the skin and then held there with an adhesive patch. Another adhesive patch that is devoid of anything on it is also applied as a source of comparison. The irritant patch is left in place for anywhere from one day to two days. After that period of time has elapsed it is taken away and the skin is examined. If the skin shows to be red, itchy and/or inflamed then more than likely it is the irritant in question that the patient is allergic to. Skin patch testing only becomes a necessity if the cause of your eczema is not known. Patch testing will help ascertain what you are allergic to, whether it be a material in a cosmetic product, nickel, creams, rubber, etc.

A general practitioner will refer an eczema patient to a skin specialist such as a dermatologist. When allergic or irritant contact dermatitis is deemed to be the cause then a skin patch test is scheduled. The entire procedure spans a few days. On the first day of the testing, small quantities of thirty or more different items are attached to the patient’s upper back by way of small patches. The patches are attached to the back with non-allergic tape. The patches are left on the skin for two days and then the patient comes back to the doctor’s office to have them taken off. The skin is then closely inspected to see if any allergic reactions have taken place. The patient then must return again, two days later for examination, as there is sometimes a delayed reaction to any one of the substances tested.

A number of substances are very commonly used to determine contact eczema. They are all additives that are very often included in many everyday kinds of materials such as creams, ointments, leathers, clothing and household cleaners. The additives include benzocaine, chrome, balsam of Peru, cobalt, clioquinol, nickel, formladehyde, epoxy resin, plants, fragrances, ethylenediamine, neomycin, paraben mix, imidazolidinyl urea, P-tert butylphenol, rosin, formaldehyde resin, paraphenylenediame, quaternium-15, rubber accelerators, and wool alcohols (also known as lanolin). I think that just about sums up to everything we use in our home and our bodies right?  These are referred to as the standard “battery of patches.” Sometimes other substances are added into the skin patch test, such as a chemical or solvent from your place of employment or a personal care product that you use on your body or face and develop problems because of.

It is important to realize that skin patch testing can only find the causes of allergic or irritant contact eczema. It has no such effect on discussing food allergies or other forms of treatment. It is essential for the spot on your skin that is to be tested to be kept dry, not only for the initial test but also until the entire procedure is completed. This might mean that you will have to take a sponge bath instead of a shower during those four days. Don’t do anything that will cause you to sweat too much during the duration of the test. This is even more important during the summer months when high humidity often causes us to sweat more. Ok, so let’s it, we live in a mean and cruel world.  First and foremost, if you follow my instructions and take the help I am offering, you do not have to use these steps because the eczema can be completely gone.  No one wants to go through life feeling like they want or need to disappear from people.  Help is here and available.  My son is eczema free and I don’t have to worry about him itching and being uncomfortable in his class.  Truth is, kids are mean and I needed to protect him if at all possible.

According to the National Institute of Health, ten to twenty percent of all babies develop eczema, but in over half of these infants, the skin disorder will get better and/or go away when they are somewhere between the ages of five and fifteen years old. An estimated one in nine children under the age of five will develop eczema. It is more difficult to get children to understand their skin disorder than it is for adults. Often children suffer more in terms of cruel comments and remarks from other children that can cut deep. Children have not mastered the ability to “go with the flow” as easily as adults have. What their peers think of them means a great deal to all children and no one wants to be shunned by others because of their appearance or the fact that they itch a lot. There are ways to help a child deal with his or her eczema.

Thoughtless, unkind remarks are likely to hurt your child from time to time, whether they come from other kids or adults, so talk to your child about these hurtful moments and reassure him or her in every way that you can. Let your child know that eczema does not make him or her strange, weird or in any way, less normal than other people. Assure your child that her skin condition cannot be “caught” by others and that it is likely to improve and perhaps even go away all together as she ages. If your child has a regular babysitter or attends a daycare center, make sure the caregivers are made aware of your child’s specific bathing, moisturizing and medicinal requirements.  There is a simple way to get rid of your child’s eczema and that is priceless.
